7 Things To Know Before Upgrading Your Driveshaft

Driveshafts
By Danielle Vito

Whether you’re replacing a failing driveshaft or are looking for a performance upgrade, understanding some driveshaft essentials is the starting point.  Read on as we explore what you need to know.

#1 Why The Upgrade?

If you’re dealing with a broken or defective driveshaft, then the need for a replacement is obvious. But, things can get cloudy if you’re just looking at changing the status quo. Are you seeking a performance upgrade, or is greater durability the must-have feature? Or is it something else? Answer these questions even before starting research.

#2 Think of the Future

Before adding a new driveshaft, figure out your plans for the car.  Is this a short-term situation? If so, then going with an affordable steel replacement may be the ideal solution.  On the other hand, if your long-term goals include some track time, then investing now in a carbon fiber driveshaft may save you money in the long run.

#3 Understanding Suspensions and Driveshafts

No matter what you drive, your vehicle is an integrated system.  So changes in one area can affect something else.  This situation frequently occurs with changes to the suspension. Even a two-inch lift may require the use of a longer driveshaft.  Keep this in mind as you think out all the upgrades.

#4 Understanding Exhaust Systems and Driveshafts

A new exhaust system can seem like a quick and easy upgrade, especially with a street ride, but lack of planning can cause headaches later on.  A large-diameter exhaust system and a bigger driveshaft (3.5 inches or 4 inches, for example) may not be able to coexist in the same tunnel, which gets back to point #2.

#5 Pick Your Material

We’ll cover driveshaft options (steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber) in a more detailed article, but basic knowledge on this topic is necessary. In short, steel is durable and the most affordable.  Aluminum offers mid-tier pricing, a weight reduction (over steel), and improved performance.  Carbon fiber is premium-priced but provides performance and safety upgrades over aluminum.

#6 It’s All About The Balance

A driveshaft is only as good as its balance.  An unbalanced driveshaft will vibrate and zap performance, so consider if rebalancing is the first step before upgrading. And don’t worry, new driveshafts from PST come already balanced.

#7 Measurement Matters

Ordering a custom driveshaft includes knowing the measurements of your existing setup. You don’t need to be a mechanic or physics professor to collect the details on the transmission, rear u-joint, and current driveshaft.  Just follow our step-by-step guide.
