Custom
Hot Rod Shafts

We consider a Hot Rod any vehicle which is built for fun, not specifically designed for racing. There are many variations on the requirements for Driveshafts for Hot Rod applications. Filling out the information form on our Orders page will help us guide you in the right direction. The U-Joint series will usually not affect the price of the shaft. In our Driveshafts 101 section, you will find information for the most common U-joints for identification.

Custom Street Hot Rod Driveshafts

Precision Shaft Technologies’ custom street hot rod driveshafts are designed and custom built specifically for your vehicle. We can build your driveshaft in steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber. Steel is the most affordable option. Aluminum will be lighter, and can handle higher horsepower than steel at 3.5 inch and 4.0 inch. Carbon Fiber will be the lightest, safest, and strongest option – however carbon fiber is not recommended for prolonged street use as the heat generated from prolonged use can damage the yoke bonds.

Custom Built Driveshafts with Joints and Slip Yokes Included

With each hot rod custom driveshaft, we include the u-joints and slip yokes for the most common transmissions. We include solid u-joints (aka non-greasable u-joints) which are stronger than the greasable u-joints and don’t require the regular maintenance of greasing your joints. The shafts are normally painted high gloss black unless you prefer to apply your own finish.

FAQ:

How much does a custom driveshaft cost?

Our custom made driveshaft costs are based on the materials that go into them. PST Driveshafts can range from $350 up to $1,500 depending on the strength and materials. You’ll find our circle-track steel shafts on the low end of that price range, and our carbon fiber drag racing shafts on the top end. Recently, the cost of steel has been skyrocketing, with the price of commodity steel more than tripling since 2020. So in many cases we’ll suggest that you consider an aluminum shaft because the cost to benefit ratio has really shifted towards aluminum in the past few months. Additionally, there is the price of the u-joints, slip yokes, and flanges. Many times these are included in the price of the shaft, but if you are interested in upgrading your parts (to Spicer U-Joints or Neapco Performance U-Joints for example) there is an additional charge. Ask your salesperson and he can assist you.

What’s your lead time for a custom driveshaft?

Right now, for our custom build driveshafts we are running with a 7-10 day lead time until the driveshaft leaves our facility. If you need a RUSH job, then ask your salesperson. For steel and aluminum driveshafts, we can usually accommodate rush jobs in 24-48 hours. We have even been known in the past to hand-deliver emergency driveshafts directly to our racers on race day. For Carbon Fibre driveshafts, expect to add another 24-48 hours to the lead times mentioned above.

When can’t I use a carbon fiber driveshaft?

We recommend that you don’t use carbon fiber driveshafts in street cars (if you’re cruising or using it as a daily driver). The heat produced by prolonged street usage can cause the bonds in the carbon fiber driveshaft to break down. The following activities are also not recommended with carbon fiber shafts: pedalling, tire shake, and wheel hop.

Can I use my slip yoke?

Yes. You can use your slip yoke for your driveshaft. If you have a Strange or Mark Williams slip yoke, then you just need to tell us what type of yoke you have and you don’t need to send your yoke in to us. If you have another type of slip yoke like a Sonnax or a stock yoke, then you will have to send in your slip yoke to us so that we can properly balance your driveshaft.

What colors do they come in?

For steel driveshafts, they come in black. For aluminum driveshafts, they come unpainted, so they will look silver. Some of our customers will polish their aluminum driveshafts to a really beautiful shine that look great in their show cars. For carbon fiber driveshafts, they will come in black and you will be able to see the black and dark grey weave pattern.
